E3 2015: PlayStation Press Conference

For those that didn’t get to see the PlayStation press conference you missed what has been touted as one of the best shows of this years E3, with so many heavy weight titles being revealed and after the initial sizzle real and a quick talk about the current standing of PlayStation as a cultural Zeitgeist due to the broadening appeal of PlayStation and that we, as gamers, are currently experiencing a historic evolution in gaming.

After that opening address the crowd was already on edge, but no one expected what would happen next.

The Last Guardian: the first game to be shown was a title that has been generating discussion for quite a few years, with rumours and speculation about whether or not it was even still in production. Showing the video of gameplay from The Last Guardian sent the crowd into a frenzy and while there weren’t many details revealed, just the confirmation that it was still in production was enough for many.

Horizon Zero Dawn: This new franchise from Guerrilla Games seems to be based in a post apocalyptic future earth, where mechanical creatures seem to now inhabit the world, during the trailer we got to see elements of gameplay that involved stealth and in game combat from a 3rd person perspective. The game looks like it has the right elements of gameplay from titles such as Tomb Raider and Uncharted set in a visually stunning environment.

Hitman: Agent 47 is back in action, during this presentation we got to see our favourite assassin doing what he does best while giving us a small glimpse at the potential plot behind this game. PlayStation also announced that there will be a PlayStation 4 exclusive beta and 6 unique contracts just for PlayStation.

Street Fighter V: Ryu, Ken and rest of the gang are back for Street Fighter V exclusively on PlayStation 4 and PC, they also revealed 2 more characters in the line up for Street Fighter V, Cammy and Birdie. There will also be a special pre-order for beta access deal which should be live on July 23rd for the PS4.

No Man’s Sky: This game was initially shown at last years E3 and generated plenty of hype then but this year they were able to show even more of the game and reveal the sheer, incredible scale of this title. There have been many other games that have been sandbox in nature, but none have ever been a universe sized sandbox, that allows you to jump between solar systems, get involved in epic space battles, explore planets and be an intergalactic explorer. Each planet has destructible environments and wide range of flora and fauna for you to examine but you will need to careful of the “Sentinels” whose job it is to protect worlds from explorers like you.

Dreams: Media Molecule have taken the creationist concept from Little Big Planet and kicked it up a notch or two, with the ability to create incredible characters and stories using the simplistic, user friendly interface so that you can create anything you can dream of. The actions taken by the things you create appears to be an exercise in puppeteering rather than interacting with autonomous creatures, but either way it looks visually amazing and loaded with potential.

Firewatch: This game is a a mystery set in the US Wyoming wilderness, where your only emotional lifeline is the person on the other end of a handheld radio, created in beautiful cartoon style with a humorous and engaging protagonist, this could definitely be an interesting game.

Destiny The Taken King: if you haven’t finished Destiny yet, warning spoilers ahead. Destiny: The Taken King is based around  Oryx, The Taken King arriving in our solar system, bringing with him a corrupted army to exact revenge on the Guardians who destroyed his son, Crota. This games looks exactly as you would expect, created in the same stunning way as the original Destiny and is due for release September 15th, 2015.

Assassins Creed Syndicate: In this next instalment of the Assassins Creed franchise, you play as either Jacob or Evie Frye in London, 1868. during the Industrial Revolution. You and your gang of “Rooks” fight against oppression and given that it is set in the era of the industrial revolution you can expect a raft of new gadgets to help you on your missions. Another bonus for PlayStation gamers was that the dreadful crimes content would be exclusive to the PlayStation 4.

World of Final Fantasy: This game based on the world of Final Fantasy, shows a much cuter side of the franchise with beloved characters and creatures being remade in an almost “Chibi” style and will be available on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in 2016.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake: This was the one that gamers have been waiting a long time for, Final Fantasy 7 has been such an iconic title for PlayStation since its release on the original PlayStation many years ago, as the trailer started to play people slowly picked up on the environments and began to realise what was coming and then as the Buster Sword came into frame the crowd at E3 (and im sure many watching at home) erupted in a collective cheer of excitement. Given the incredible story line of this game and it being remade for the current generation of consoles this game is sure to keep fans in a furore of excitement for some time to come.

Devolver Digital: The team from Devolver showed off a slew of incredible games to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita including Broforce, Titan Souls, Not A Hero, Hotline Miami 2, and the newest game from Serious Sam developer, The Talos Principle. each game had its own distinct style from classic 8-bit through to a modern, beautifully rendered environment.

Shenmue 3: The long awaited third instalment in the Shenmue series was announced but not in the way most people would have expected, with this being a PlayStation presentation the news that this was the launch of a kickstarter to fund the creation and development of this beloved game was a bit unusual. However there is obviously still some overwhelming amounts of love for this game with the kickstarter campaign quickly reaching half of its total of two millions dollars within 24 hrs and has now been fulled funded with a total of just over three million already pledged with 29 days still to go. Its been 14 years since Shenmue 2 and with many questions left unanswered hopefully Shenmue 3 will finally allow for all these questions to be resolved.

Project Morpheus: This was showcased at E3 and given that Microsoft had shown off the Hololens, PlayStation had to showcase their VR system to compete. While showing off some of the single player titles they then went on to show off the new multiplayer game Rigs, which is a 3 vs 3 multiplayer game that would be available to play at E3. it was also said that Morpheus is a choice and adds value to the gaming experience which hopefully means that it wont be a mandatory peripheral.

PlayStation View: Following on form Project Morpheus PlayStation View the (US only at this stage) Pay TV service that allows for purchase of individual channel to watch though the PlayStation 4.

COD Black Ops 3: In a surprise move PlayStation announced that they would be partnering with Activision for COD Black Ops 3 to ensure that PlayStation gamers will get beta access and map packs first before any other platform while also showing off some of the games new features, multiplayer gameplay and story line in the trailer.

Star Wars Disney Infinity 3.0: Fans of Disney Infinity and Star Wars got a great surprise with the announcement of 2 different packs, one based on the prequel trilogy called  Twilight of the Republic (Episodes 1 to 3) and Rise against the Empire (Episodes 4 to 6) and that there would be a limited edition Disney Infinity 3.0 pack exclusive for PlayStation and that Boba Fett  would be coming first to the PlayStation 4.

Star Wars Battlefront: While no additional information was given from the EA presentation, they did show a different gameplay video, giving fans of the franchise a further look into the upcoming world or Star Wars Battlefront and the co-op gameplay.

Uncharted 4 A Thief s End: This trailer showed off everything you would expect from a current generation Uncharted game, with one exception, that being the rather embarrassing and on stage malfunction of the game, that required the presentation to quickly be restarted. However once under way we get to see Nathan and Sully at their finest with a daring shoot-out and action packed car chase.

With so many incredible and unexpected announcements at this years presentation PlayStation certainly gave fans a lot to be happy about.
